Channel 7 surprised Spellbinder Marlin Day Cwach while she was telling stories to LPS’s Hopkins Elementary School’s third graders on Tuesday, October 6th. They were there to honor her as Channel 7 Everyday Hero for beginning the Spellbinders of Littleton non-profit organization in 2004. Marlin was inspired by the tragedy at Columbine to bring stories to children that show ordinary characters overcoming difficult situations, to become successful, to even become heroes. The stories that are told, not read, enhance the literacy programs, introduce the students to a variety of cultures and characters, and enhance the love of stories and reading. She originally was a member of Denver’s Spellbinders and thought Littleton Public Schools needed the program also. Marlin spent over a year planning, meeting with school officials, soliciting funds, and training volunteers. One July 7, 2004, she held the first meeting. This group of seven has grown to 25 storytellers who have been enchanting students in 17 Littleton Public Schools, plus telling to several assisted living centers. Marlin is one woman who through her passion and persistence brought happiness to numerous listeners and tellers. She was an ordinary person who overcame many difficulties to become successful, to become a hero.
