Film Follows High School Seniors Navigating the Stressful College Admissions Process

Get a sneak peek of the new documentary “Try Harder!” prior to its broadcast premiere —and continue the conversation locally.

Front Range Community College is hosting a public screening of the new documentary film Try Harder! from Emmy Award-winning Independent Lens. Watch the movie, then stay online for a live virtual discussion with local experts. Both virtual events are free and open to the public.

ABOUT THE FILM:

At San Francisco’s Lowell High School, the kids are stressed out. It’s an academic pressure cooker with a majority Asian American student body. High-achieving seniors share their dreams and anxieties about getting into a top university. But is college worth the grind?

  • Ian Her Many Horses, PhD —Assistant Teaching Professor, CU Teach, School of Education, University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Her Many Horses grew up on the Rosebud Reservation and is a graduate of Todd County High School and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has taught math and computer science at Todd County high school, and has worked for CU-Boulder as the program coordinator for the Indigenous Alliance Program, which is a STEM recruitment program for Native high school students
  • Kathleen Strong, LPC — Licensed Professional Counselor, FRCC. Strong serves Front Range Community College students through our Larimer Campus counseling office.
  • Mara Tinajero Daza — Student Life Graduate Assistant, FRCC. Mara is a first-year graduate student in the Student Affairs and Higher Education program at Colorado State University. She has a passion for supporting students at the college level by providing them access to campus resources and support services through the lens of equity, access and community.
